What is the future of human relations?
By Christopher McCauley
The California Human Relations Project

What words will be used to describe relations among different racial or ethnic groups in the first decade of the 21st Century?  What is likely to happen if there are no additional measures taken to reduce inter-group tension?  How will inclusion be determined in a state where no one group constitutes a majority?

These profound questions are central to the focus of a new collaboration between CAHRO and the Western Justice Center Foundation (WJCF), launched this summer with a $92,000 planning grant from The James Irvine Foundation.

The Project is particularly interested in the design of concrete strategies for creating a more inclusive society in the first decade of the 21st Century.  We are about the business of envisioning--that is intentionally choosing strategic pathways to a future broadly inclusive of the diverse people who live here.  Historically, studies have focused more narrowly; for example, on specific cases of institutional breakdown or patterns of bias.  The California Human Relations Project is "future-focused" on discovering the scenarios/pathways that are more likely to lead toward an inclusive society characterized by people and institutions committed to finding "a place at the table" for all Californians.  The next and successful strategies for human relations will likely come from new and different thinking.  We invite you to join us.

Please help make this effort successful.  For information about how you can participate or to simply request information or to be placed on our mailing list, contact:  The California Human Relations Project, c/o The Western Justice Center Foundation, 85 South Grand Avenue, Pasadena, CA 91105.  The telephone number is  (626) 584-7495;  fax number is (626) 568-8223.

Christopher McCauley, former President and Executive Director of the Los Angeles City Human Relations Commission is principal consultant to the California Human Relations Project.  Marty Mercado, who served in the administrations of Governor Jerry Brown and Attorney General John Van de Kamp, is also a consultant to the Project.
