National Center for Hate Crime Prevention, Education Development Center, Inc. To address the problem of hate crimes in our society and to foster prevention efforts, the federal government has funded the new National Center for Hate Crime
Prevention. Co-funded by the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention and the US Department of Education, the center provides technical assistance to professionals on responding to hate crime
incidents and on working with young people to prevent such devastating violations of individuals' basic civil rights.Hate crimes seriously threaten our democratic society, which is built on the strength of its
diversity. Thousands of Americans are victimized each year because of their skin color, ethnicity, religion, gender, or sexual orientation. These crimes have a devastating impact, not only on individual
victims but on the communities in which they live. Since the majority of hate crimes are committed by young people, there is a pressing need for youth-serving organizations and agencies to help prevent these heinous
crimes. To assist their efforts, the National Center for Hate Crime Prevention strives to improve communication about best practices in preventing juvenile hate crime, promote collaboration among various
disciplines and organizations, and urge policy makers to make institutional changes. To that end, the center:
- Organizes hate crime prevention and response trainings for practitioners, trainers, and youth
- Conduct presentations for policy makers in the fields of education, juvenile justice, and criminal justice
- Provides technical assistance to agencies and communities dedicated to preventing hate crime
- Develops publications and other resource materials to help professionals and communities address the complex issues involved in juvenile hate crime and its impact on society
The center works in partnership with other agencies and organizations active in hate crime prevention, including the Anti-Defamation League, the Center for Democratic Renewal, the International Association of Chiefs
of Police, and the Congress of National Black Churches. The center is continually looking to expand our library of resources on hate crime materials and is very interested in hearing about other community efforts
to respond to hate crimes. We are particularly interested in work related to youth prevention programs and/or juvenile diversion/alternative sentencing programs for hate crime offenders. To
