November4-6th, 1999CAHRO board, staff and volunteers are working
hard on our upcoming Silver Anniversary Conference: ''Building Human Rights Coalitions for a New Millennium.'' The goal for the conference is for participants to learn how coalitions can be used to influence the
course of civil rights and human relations.
CAHRO will bring together people from multiple disciplines throughout California to present and participate at the conference. Presenters will be drawn from:
- environmental movement
- labor unions
- religious organizations
- academia
- other groups that address human relations and civil rights issues
California's growing economy and continual demographic shifts will prove to be one of the strongest societal factors affecting human relations and civil rights in the coming years. Panels of economists and
demographers are being tasked with providing the conference attendees with an examination of the interaction between their discipline and intergroup relations and what they expect to happen as a result of the trends
they see developing.
The conference will include youth dialogues on intergroup relations as they play out on campus and will provide insight as to how young people growing up in the 1980's and 1990's perceive
civil rights and human relations issues today. For those whose work was influenced by the 60's it is important to listen to the views of those who are destined to move forward from a different
perspective.
One of the opportunities of coalition building is an exponential growth in political power and this will not go unnoticed. As a result, conference planners have arranged for the Speaker
of the Assembly, Antonio Villaraigosa, to speak on the issue of the value of building coalitions to impact the course human relations in California. In keeping with the theme of the conference, workshops on
coalition building will be held both on a regional and a topical basis.
The total cost for the conference is:
Pro-rated
Day One - $20/members $25/non-members
Day Two - $50/members $60/non-members
Day Three - $50/members $60/non-members
