Training for Trainers: Hate Violence Victim Assistance Training For Community Based Organizations


TRAINING INSTRUCTIONS

  1. Place a sign up sheet at the entrance and have signs made with each trainee's name on it that is visible to other participants
  2. Trainers introduce yourselves with a few words about your background and interest in the field
  3. Deal with logistics (restrooms, how day is scheduled, problem soving with those who can't stay the whole time, etc.)
  4. Trainer states ''Before we get started we'd like to find out who you are, why you're here and what you hope to get out of this training.  Please introduce yourself include something about your interest in helping victims of hate violence and what you hope gets done today''
  5. Trainers state learning goals and elaborate
  6. Ask if everyone understands the goals or has any questions
  7. Handout training outline for first learning goal and use lecture/discussion format to cover material - Choreograph presentation of material among trainers - pause for questions after each issue is covered.
  8. Handout reporting form and instructions
  9. Trainer role play: Fishbowl
  10. Discussion of role play
  11. Trainee role play (6 groups) - They write reports but leave action take, recommendations and comment sections blank
  12. Debriefing

BREAK

  1. Recap of how to write a report
  2. Introduction of resource people - They state what they do and give examples - No questions until later in session
  3. Handout training outline for remaining learning goals and use lecture/discussion format to cover material - choreograph presentation of material among trainers and resource people - pause for questions after each issue is covered

BREAK AND ASSEMBLE BACK INTO ROLE PLAY GROUPINGS

  1. Discuss and identify needs of victim in role play
  2. Discuss and Brainstorm ideas for meeting needs of victims
  3. Completion of action taken, recommendations and comment sections of report
  4. Role play accessing resources using resource people

BREAK AND REASSEMBER TRAINEES INTO ONE GROUP

  1. Debriefing and questions for resource people
  2. Summary, handouts and statement on follow-up

CURRICULUM

  1. De-escalating tension to get a hate violence report
    1. Showing concern for the welfare of the victim
      1. Ascertaining whether the victim needs emergency assistance
      2. Ascertaining whether the victim or victim's family feels there is an immediate threat to well-being
    2. Acceptance of the reporting party's perceptions
      1. Assume the victim did not provoke the incident and had no responsibility to foresee or avoid it
      2. Assume the truth of the report no matter how unlikely.  Clarify apparent contradictions in a way that does not show skepticism
    3. Apply active listening skills
    4. Let the reporter speak to relieve tension initially without too many interruptions.  use the initial statements as a guide for questions designed to elicit the chronology of the incident
  2. Getting the story in chronological order form someone who is distrated or tends to ramble-
    1. Ask about the initial point of contact between the perpetrator and victim and follow it with questions designed to elicti responses about subsequent acitons and reactions in their order of occurrence
    2. If the reporter does not respond to the question directly or begins talking about something that occurred out of order, reassure the victim or witness that you sill listen to the whole story but you need to hear what happened step by step to be sure everything gets covered in the report

HANDOUTS

Learning Objectives

    Trainees will demonstrate their ability to de-escalate the emotional trauma affecting a victim or witness of a hate violence incident to the extent necessary to get an incident report

    Trainees will demonstrate their ability to get a complete and accurate report from the victim or witness of a hate violence incident

    Trainees will demonstrate their ability to assess the resource needs for the victim of a hate violence incident

    Trainees will demonstrate their skill in identifying and accessing appropriate resources to assist the victim of a hate violence incident and prevent its recurrence

    Trainees will demonstrate their understanding and familiarity with the procedures for processing hate violence reports

    Trainees will be able to understand and apply techneques for identifying the needs of hate violence victims

    Trainees will be able to understand and apply techniques for taking appropriate action to assist victims of hate violence

Training Methodology

    Written materials to provide instruction, background information, and protocols

    Lecture and discussion to present knowledge, skills, and abilities and allow trainees to clarify, reformulate, and adapt them in a way appropriate to the individual

    Role plays to enable the trainees to practice and demonstrate the appropriate skills and abilitites

    Role play interventions when appropriate to enable trainees to correct or improve their behaviors to demonstrate their capacity to apply the appropriate skills and abilities

    Reinforcement of learning objectives through reviewing prior curriculum, repsonse to trainer questions, and application in role plays

    Trainer and trainee assessment of learning objective achievements and modifications to training as appropriate
