CAHRO's Civil Rights Awards

CAHRO recognizes that most people dedicating their lives to promoting and protecting human rights go unrecognized outside their immediate communities.  It is for this reason that CAHRO asks local civil rights and human relations groups from throughout California to nominate people who willingly give of their time and energy to human rights issues without expecting, or getting much, in return.  This year California Attorney General Bill Lockyer provided the keynote speech for the California Civil Rights Leadership Awards.  Here are this year's awardees:

Judith Appel
Coalition on Homelessness, San Francisco

Carla Arranaga
Deputy-in-Charge of Hate Crime Suppression Unit for the Los Angeles County D.A's Office

Saundra Byrant
Executive Director for All Peoples Christian Center in South Central Los Angeles

Maha ElGenaidi
Founder and Executive Director of the Islamic Networks Group in San Jose

Jennifer Friedenbach
Organizer at the Oshun Center in San Francisco and runs a center for homeless women in the Tenderloin District of the city

Lin Fujitsubo
President of the Orange County Human Relations Council

Henry Hodge
Co-chair of the Interagency Coalition for Human and Civil Rights, San Diego

Dr. Kay Inaba
Founder of the North East Urban Village Valley Initiative in Northridge

Aminah Jahi
President of the San Jose NAACP

Charles E. Knox Sr.
President of the Human Relations Council of Greater Hemet

Marilyn Medler
Vice President of the Huntington Beach Human Rights Task Force

Kerry Peirson
Advocate for low-income residents of Marin County

Susan Reese
Graphic Artist and volunteer with Orange County Human Relations Council

Helen Rucker
Founder of Coalition of Minority Organizations in Seaside (COMO) and Former CAHRO Vice President

Phil Shigekuni
Dedicated member of the Japanese American Citizens League (JACL) who was instrumental in the passage of the Civil Liberties Act of 1988.

Harold Tamkin
Vice President of the Burbank Human Relations Council

James Tolbert
Private Attorney who Founded "People to People" in San Fernando Valley
