Youth Leadership Initiation for Conflict Resolution Being Formed by NIDR

The National Institute for Dispute Resolution (NIDR) in Washington, DC is organizing a national youth leadership initiative for conflict resolution education, requesting CAHRO to serve as its principal collaborator in California.  The goals of the program are to showcase the use of conflict resolution in schools to address inter-group conflicts, support student-initiated efforts to expand efforts in their schools to resolve inter-group conflict, and demonstrate effective linkages of school based programs to other human relations activities at the local level.

The youth leadership initiative builds upon a successful national youth anti-violence essay contest that NIDR underwrote from 1994 to 1996.  That contest, which solicited essays from students on how to expand school-based conflict resolution education efforts, identified inter-group relations as a primary area of conflict in local schools. The new initiative will solicit ideas from students on how they can more effectively address inter-group conflict in the schools and communities and provide modest grants to implement innovative solutions. It will showcase successful programs and make national awards for excellence.

NIDR is focusing its fund raising efforts for the program in selected areas around the country, one being California.  NIDR hopes to complete its fund raising in the next few months and launch the program in 1998.

The National Institute for Dispute Resolution is a national non-profit organization that advocates for and demonstrates the effective use of conflict resolution skills, processes, and systems in order to create a more civil society. Founded in 1983 by a consortium of foundations and corporations - Hewlett, Ford, MacArthur AT&T, and Prudential - NIDR is a catalyst for changing how people and institutions approach conflict through constructive problem-solving and conflict resolution.
